Walton Trail Phase 1

A Project of Southern Maryland Mountain Bikers
Leonardtown, MD

$ 5925.00 raised of $ 10000.00

Southern Maryland Mountain Bikers (SMMB) are rerouting the trail on the Walton Tract of the Salem State Forest to enhance sustainability and user experience while maintaining connectivity with nearby trails. Phase 1 of this project involves building a new multi-use, natural surface trail, addressing trail water flow and wetland crossing issues, and closing a trail section made obsolete by the new trail.

Phase 1 of the Walton Track Trail project is a pivotal step towards creating a more accessible and sustainable outdoor space. This phase encompasses four key efforts:

Constructing a new multiuse natural surface trail spanning approximately 1.6 miles and 3 feet wide. This trail addresses challenges posed by recent property logging and eliminates trail trespassing onto private property.

Installation of a small puncheon to facilitate safe passage over an area prone to water flow between the parking lot and the existing trail.

Building a new wetland and stream crossing to replace a poorly constructed and hazardous bridge from the previous landowner. Detailed engineering specifications mitigate safety and ensure durability.

Closure of outdated trail sections rendered obsolete by the implementation of the aforementioned improvements, enhancing overall trail integrity and user experience.

With a focus on sustainability, safety, and improved access, Phase 1 of the Walton Track Trail project sets the stage for a more enjoyable Salem State Forest experience. Donate today to help create a trail system that benefits both the community and the environment.
