Shared-Use Coalitions

IMBA has long championed shared-use trail systems. They build a trail community, reduce congestion and impact to the land, and are easier for agencies to manage. But even better is a shared-use coalition of trail users. These groups help break down the barriers between user groups by building trust and pooling resources to accomplish goals that benefit a broader trail community.

Often, the collective voice of a shared-use coalition is greater than one user group acting alone. A unified recreation community is also likely to streamline relationships with the land manager, resulting in faster progress on trail projects.

IMBA has compiled a partial list of shared-use coalitions from around the country. These groups are excellent examples of the benefits of cooperation. If you don't see one in your region, ask your local land manager or consider forming a new group. Lots of ideas on how to start a club can be found at imba.com.
