The BLM and IMBA's Golden Anniversary Partnership - 1996
"Mountain Biking Through History"
The International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) recognizes the important role played by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in caring for our nation's public lands. BLM recognizes mountain biking as a legitimate use of public lands. IMBA acknowledges BLM's commitment to multiple use of public lands and its desire to promote resource-based recreational activities on public lands in the future.
Because of the value of BLM-managed land and trails for mountain bikers, IMBA agrees to enter into this Golden Anniversary Partnership with BLM to designate the following trails as outstanding multiple-use trails on BLM lands:
- Glade Run Trail System, New Mexico
- Sunshine Loop, Arizona
- Merced River Trail, California
- Kokopelli's Trail, Colorado and Utah
The exceptional trails on BLM land highlighted by the Golden Anniversary Partnership meet the following criteria: they are of interest to mountain bikers of varying skills, they are sustainable, and they allow mountain bicyclists to stop along their route to view and study important historic and pre-historic resources.
For this Golden Anniversary Partnership, IMBA agrees to promote these special trails through its communication network and will encourage mountain bicyclists to support environmentally sound and socially responsible trail use.
In return, BLM agrees to identify these trails as outstanding mountain biking opportunities to work with IMBA to identify additional mountain biking opportunities on BLM land, to assist in providing educational materials about the value of these resources, and to promote responsible use by publicizing IMBA's Rules of the Trail-the standard code of conduct for off-road cyclists.
IMBA and BLM agree to collaborate with local and regional agencies to identify trails for mountain bike use while protecting significant cultural and natural resources.
