What would we do without trails?

Support the Legal Advocacy Fund!

Will you help us fight the next wave of attacks against mountain biking? Right now your gift of $25, $40, $100 — or more, if possible — is critical.

Contributions from riders like you help to protect riding opportunities – new and old. For example, California State Parks has announced a proposal to officially open singletrack for mountain biking on the shoulders of Mt. Tamalpais (the storied "birthplace" of mountain biking). Already local hiking and equestrian groups have vowed to fight against any new access for mountain biking in Marin County, despite plentiful evidence that well-designed trails can be successfully shared.

In the last 12 months we have tallied a list of impressive achievements across the country:

  • In the span of 60 days, IMBA gathered a record 8,000 comments supporting a National Park Service rule change that would allow for more mountain biking opportunities in America’s most scenic parks
  • IMBA California obtained a governor’s veto on a state Wilderness bill that could have closed singletrack in popular riding destinations in areas like Henry W. Coe and Robert Louis Stevenson state parks.
  • At IMBA’s 2008 World Summit, the U.S. Forest Service released an agency-wide memo clearly grouping mountain biking with activities such as hiking and equestrian use, and also as an activity to be managed separately from motorized travel.
  • As a massive public lands bill made its way through Congress, IMBA representatives pushed hard to preserve historic riding resources in Virginia, Oregon, California and other areas across the country

We need your help to keep the momentum going as we strive to achieve bike-friendly policies across the political spectrum. Please make a gift to the Legal Advocacy Fund today.

Your contribution is critical to prevent huge setbacks — like the looming ban on bikes on the 3,100-mile Continental Divide trail. Groups that oppose us would likely seize such a ban as an opportunity to legislate bikes out of public lands where we currently ride.

Opposition to mountain biking remains fierce in certain communities across the nation. In Montana, a lawsuit threatens to ban bikes from well-established riding areas. Anti-bike groups are imploring land managers to lump bicycles with off-road vehicles in their management strategies.

Help define mountain biking as a low-impact activity by making your Legal Fund donation today. Your gift will provide IMBA with the resources we need to educate trail users about the impact of bikes and argue against false claims used to exclude us from appropriate riding opportunities.

Remember, every lawsuit and every decision that excludes bikes — whether it’s made in Utah or Virginia or Maine — adversely affects riding for everyone. Such decisions guide legislators and land managers across state lines and it is imperative that we continue building successes.

Transitions in Washington, D.C. demand that IMBA maintains its influence on Beltway insiders. We have an opportunity to build upon our recent successes, but not without your support.

Together, we have made incredible progress, but numerous threats still loom. It’s time to take advantage of our momentum and invest in new relationships that will serve all riders for years to come. Help us fight against drilling rigs whose access roads would obliterate scenic rides. Help us defend your right to ride your most loved trails. Help IMBA have a loud and clear voice in Washington, D.C. Please show your support of IMBA’s work by donating to the Legal Advocacy Fund. We are committed to representing your interests and we can’t do it without your help.
