Maine Winter Sports Center Trail Design and Construction Project

Project Number:
MWSC11_01

Having trained over 150,000 people since 1997, Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crews travel the country year-round providing education and organizing communities around sustainable trails.  Over the course of a four day visit they teach, design, build, and inspire.

In May of 2010, staff from the Maine Winter Sports Center traveled 350 miles from their home base in Fort Kent to the southern part of the state to attend a TCC visit in Portland.  The group was seeking information and techniques to improve existing trails and build new ones at their own facility.

This summer IMBA Trail Solutions will make a return visit to Fort Kent directly and work to expand the body of knowledge for trailbuilding.  During a ‘train the trainers’ session IMBA will cover both hand-built and mechanized techniques.  The ultimate goal is to foster the long-term expertise that will help the Winter Sport Center continue to be a model for sustainability and healthy living in rural communities.
