Risk Management

Many land managers and trail organizations cringe when they contemplate this topic. “Risk management is too complex — I don’t have the time or money to deal with that,” is a commonly heard sentiment.

In fact, your organization may already using valuable safety and risk management procedures as part of existing operating practices. Risk management is just the systemization of these separate practices.

If you stay involved in trails for long enough, there is a real possibility that eventually you’ll be faced with a lawsuit. A risk management program helps prevent injuries in the first place, improves your organization’s defensibility in the court of law (and in the court of public opinion), and may shut down lawsuits before they start.
