A new management plan in the Lake Tahoe Basin has the potential to close an area of the country’s most scenic trails, such as Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Lake Tahoe is a vacation destination for outdoor recreation and more specifically mountain biking. The U.S. Forest Service is seeking input for their draft management plan that includes Wilderness areas overlapping areas home to significant mountain bike trails.
As stewards of the public lands we love it is important that mountain bicyclists sign on our support for protection that preserve these wild areas for other forms of recreation and for the enjoyment of future generations. However, since federal agencies have defined Wilderness to exclude bicycles, we can not support Wilderness for areas with important trails.
