IMBA Supports the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness Bill near Taos, NM

Public Lands Initiative Campaign

The Columbine-Hondo Wilderness Act receives IMBA's full support!

After intense and comprehensive discussions beginning in 2011, cyclists joined Wlderness advocates and the New Mexico congressional delegation to create a powerful land protection bill for the future of Taos County.

IMBA and several cycling groups in New Mexico are pleased to announce their full support for New Mexico’s U.S. Senator Tom Udall's reintroduction of the Columbine Hondo Wilderness Act (S.776). Local cycling businesses and organizations backing the proposal include the Taos Cyclery, Santa Fe Fat Tire Society, Friends of the Outdoors, Velo De Animas Bicycle Club, Del Norte Mountainbike Alliance and the Bicycle Coalition of New Mexico.

The bill will bring resolution to the Columbine Hondo Wilderness Study Area by designating it Wilderness, while also improving the Wheeler Peak Wilderness and establishing a new 20 mile high alpine single track mountain bike trail loop opportunity along Lost Lake trail from Taos Ski Valley to the East Fork trail to Red River. Local cyclist Sean Cassily of the Team Fitaos, says, “The bill is great for New Mexico in that it protects the land and creates important recreation assets for the Taos community. This makes a difference in terms of quality of life for those of us who live here, while also attracting additional summer visitation which has become more and more important around the West.”
