Colorado's Gunnison/Crested Butte

Public Lands Initiative Campaign

Adjacent development and new resource extraction are constant threats to the public lands and trails in Gunnison County.  Therefore, IMBA is working with the Crested Butte Moutain Bike Association, and Gunnison Trails to identify specific National Forest and BLM lands in Gunnison County that host current and future high-quality mountain bike/recreation assets and ecological values so that we can make informed recommendations for protecting these assets and values for future generations. We are meeting with local and national conservation and sportsman partners to discuss common values and interests. These lands, in there current and natural state, help drive and support a robust and sustainable recreation economy. Ensuring that remains viable is the goal of our involvement.

In the fall of 2012, U.S. Senator Michael Bennet, established a process to gather input regarding the long term management of public lands in Gunnison County. You can share your comments here.

“We are committed to protecting these lands for their ecological values while maintaining important bicycle trail access that drives the local recreation economy. People from around the world come to Gunnison County to hike, bike, ski, fish and hunt. People and Businesses move here based on that quality life. The recreation economy depends on land protection and continued quality trail access. Therefore, we want to use the resources and energy generated by those interests to help create permanent land protection legislation,” says Aaron Clark, IMBA’s Conservation Manager.
