IMBA Europe’s board of directors recently selected Mark Torsious as the organization’s first full-time director. Torsius previously led advocacy efforts for the Dutch Tour Cycling Union (NTFU), a cycling organization that counts more than 53,000 members and 470 affiliated clubs. He also founded the NTFU’s Singletracks arm, which focuses on the mountain bike community.
“After seven years of working for NTFU, it’s an honor and an enormous challenge to build a sustainable foundation for IMBA Europe,” said Torsius. I’m inspired by IMBA Europe’s ambition to increase grassroots capacity in all European countries. My role will be to advance mountain bike-friendly legislation and secure support and funding in Brussels.”
IMBA Europe emerged last summer with generous support from the bicycle industry — particularly SRAM and Specialized. The European Union now recognizes IMBA Europe as a NGO and national-level cycling groups from more than a dozen nations have expressed interest in joining.
Trail Solutions, IMBA’s fee-based trail building program, conducted several successful projects in European nations last year, with more on tap in the months ahead.
According to IMBA Europe Board Chairman Harold Veldkamp, Torsius is the right man for the job. “Mark’s work in Holland benefitted mountain bikers tremendously. He has the skills and vision to lead IMBA Europe and create similar successes across Europe.”
