A partnership between IMBA and the Volkswagen Sea Otter Classic (April 18-21 in Monterey, Calif.) will provide great riding experiences for attendees who visit the event’s festival zone. The “SRAM Mountain Bike Skills Zone, presented by IMBA” will offer bike park features for teenage and adult riders looking to test the vast array of demo bikes and equipment on offer at the four-day event. The adjacent “Specialized/IMBA Kids Bike Play Area” will provide terrain for younger riders, including push- and pedal-bike features that even toddlers will enjoy.
Both the Skills Zone and the Kids Bike Play Area will be designed and developed by IMBA's Trail Solutions, with design and construction led by staff member Randy Spangler. In addition to building bike parks and flow trails for IMBA, Spangler helps create the bike features and judge performances for the Red Bull Rampage and other high-profile gravity competitions around the world. The bike park design and construction firm Alpine Bike Parks will contribute their FlowForm features to the facilities.
The SRAM Cycling Fund recently awarded a grant to IMBA to help further develop urban bike parks nationwide. "The work that IMBA does on the ground to enhance and preserve trails fits so well with our desire to grow the sport," said SRAM Global Marketing Director David Zimberoff. "We couldn't be more excited to have them partner with SRAM to bring this Skill Zone to the Sea Otter Classic."
The Specialized/IMBA Kids Bike Play Area expands on IMBA's partnership with Specialized's First Gear program. "We’re excited to partner with IMBA on the Kids Bike Play Area at Sea Otter this year," said Specialized Advocacy Director Simon Dunne. "If we can help kids form great riding memories while they’re young, they’ll be more likely to stick with cycling throughout their lives. We know that IMBA is going to design and build an amazing experience for the kids, and it will be all parents can do to drag them home!"
IMBA has been a leader advancing all aspects of mountain biking, including bike parks. Recent park projects IMBA has been involved in include the Rockburn (MD), Truckee (CA) and Valmont (CO) bike park projects. IMBA offers technical assistance for the design and project management of bike facilities to cities, towns, land managers and park districts.
“With the addition of IMBA’s Trail Solutions team we’re able to enhance an already incredibly high-energy non-competitive area of the festival,” said Sea Otter Classic president and CEO Frank Yohannan. “For many, a large part of cycling is the fun quotient. With IMBA on board in the SRAM Mountain Bike Skills Zone, we know that a vital and dynamic piece of Sea Otter is going to achieve even greater heights.”
A free presentation on IMBA's Urban Bike Park Initiative—supported by the SRAM Cycling Fund—will be held in the hospitality tent in the Italian Village at the Sea Otter Classic, Friday, April 19, at 2 PM. Urban park planners, state parks officials, media and others are invited to attend. Register here or for more information contact IMBA Events Manager events [at] imba [dot] com (Terry Breheny).
