The International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) is leading a drive to encourage California-based clubs and bicycle industry partners to support Proposition 21, also known as the State Parks and Wildlife Conservation Trust Fund Act of 2010. During the Biketoberfest celebration, Oct. 16 from 11-6 in Marin County, IMBA California Policy Advisor Tom Ward announced the results of the drive, including nearly 200 organizations that have signed on to IMBA's petition endorsement of Prop. 21.

"The passage of Prop. 21 will ensure the long-term support of bicycle trails and supporting facilities in state parks," says Ward. "It will provide much-needed funds for maintaining, modifying and increasing the number of trails available to mountain bikers. It's time to give our parks the resources they need to deliver the high-quality recreation opportunities that the public expects and deserves."

More than a quarter of Californians ride bicycles for recreation, and bicycling is the biggest component of the state's $46 billion-dollar recreation economy, according to a 2009 study conducted the Outdoor Industry Foundation. Many of the world's biggest producers of bicycles and bicycle equipment are based in California.

“We have been a supporter of IMBA for 20 years and continue to support IMBA’s work to keep trails open on public land," said Mike Sinyard, the president and founder of Specialized Bicycles. "We believe that Prop. 21 would be a huge benefit to the people of California. Specialized was there when the first tires hit the dirt in Marin County and Santa Cruz, and we're eager to help bring improved resources to mountain bikers across the state. We encourage anyone who loves the outdoors in California to support Proposition 21.”

Giant USA General Manager Elysa Walk commented, “Giant has over 160 retailers throughout California, and many of our shops benefit from being located close to California's fabulous state parks. Increased funds and a more stable parks budget will bring additional vitality to our retailers, while directly improving the quality of life for all state residents."
