Last month, the ninth celebration of IMBA’s Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day (TKMBD) event helped bring thousands of young riders into the outdoor world to ride their bikes. Recognized across the globe, the 2012 edition saw 121 IMBA events, and 45 others arranged by dealers in the Specialized Bicycles dealer network. Locations ranged from Mexico to Italy and across North America, including a ride at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejune in North Carolina. Based on organizers' estimates, at least 10,000 participants were inspired to ride at IMBA-affiliated events.
In the U.S. this year, IMBA reached out to our nation's military families stationed at home and abroad. IMBA was proud to help promote the shared missions of the National Military Family Association, the White House's Joining Forces and the Sierra Club's Military Families and Veterans Initiative. IMBA also supports the First Lady's Let's Move! initiative by serving as a partner in the Outdoor Alliance for Kids (OAK) coalition.
Local events were supported by IMBA’s clubs and chapters, as well as scout troops, bike shops, Trips for Kids groups, parks and recreation departments and outdoor education centers.
Participants posted photos and videos to IMBA’s Facebook page, hoping to be randomly selected to win kid-sized bikes from Specialized. Congratulations to winners Hana Lapham of Washougal, WA, and Andrew Antonio of Lafayette, IN, for scoring the prizes.
CLIF Kid and Specialized provided event sponsorship. Additional official partners included the National Park Service and the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management. IMBA sends particular thanks to Specialized Bicycles for encouraging its network of dealers and independent bike shops to host TKMBD events.
More About IMBA's Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day
IMBA's Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day is an annual celebration held on the first Saturday of October. The event, developed and coordinated by IMBA, strives to encourage communities around the world to join together and ride mountain bikes with youth. Informal or formal, one child or one hundred children, TKMBD celebrates the joy of riding in the dirt.
Besides being good, healthy fun, the goal is to develop a connection between kids and the natural world around them. Today's children are tomorrow's land managers and politicians — future decision-makers for important matters like recreation and access to public lands.
