History of MTB Instructor Certification
The Canadian Mountain Bike Instructor Certification (CMIC) program, established in 1995, was the first of its kind to be recognized in the mountain bike industry. Program leaders taught riding skills to more than 4,000 individuals using methods and techniques developed by professional mountain bikers.
In 2009, two-time World Masters Downhill Champion and CMIC Master Coach Shaums March acquired the CMIC program’s intellectual property and copyrights. March expanded the course offerings and made them available outside of Canada by establishing the International Mountain Bike Instructor Certification (IMIC).
In January 2013, IMBA purchased the rights to the International Mountain Bike Instructor Certification from Shaums March. Shaums has collaborated with IMBA staff in developing the program curriculum and will serve as the ICP’s lead instructor trainer. Tammy Donahugh, a longtime IMBA staff member, professional mountain biker and certified skills instructor, is the program’s manager.
