Instructor Certification Program

The Instructor Certification Program (ICP) offers professional training and certification for individuals who lead group rides or teach mountain bike skills clinics. For five years, IMBA built on proven, successful methods nearly two decades in development, and established a high standard for mountain bike skills instructor training.

Effective January 1, 2018, March Northwest will become the owner, operator and official provider of the ICP. March Northwest is a mountain bike skills coaching and guiding company led by three-time World Team member, two-time Masters World Champion and mountain bike skills coach Shaums March. March has served IMBA’s ICP program as the lead instructor trainer and curriculum developer since IMBA purchased the rights to March’s International Mountain Bike Instructor Certification program in 2013 and transformed it into the current ICP curriculum.

IMBA will recognize ICP as its preferred provider of mountain bike skills coaching instruction and looks forward to maintaining a partnership.

ICP courses are offered year-round all over the world, but primarily in the U.S. The ICP program offers three levels of certification:

  • Level 1 Certification : A twenty-hour course that certifies an individual to guide rides and perform fundamental skills analysis with a high level of competence.  This course focuses on group and risk management including an introductory to skills instruction.
  • Level 2 Certification: A thirty-hour course that certifies an individual to teach intermediate mountain bike skills. Skills covered include body position, braking, shifting, climbing, descending, bike/body separation, wheel lifts and much more.
  • Level 3 Certification: A thirty-hour course that certifies an individual to teach advanced mountain bike skills. Skills covered include bunny hops, drops, high speed cornering, pumping, jumping and more.

The ICP will honor all current and lapsed IMBA ICP certifications, renewals and expiration dates, and continue to offer the ICP Level 1, 2, and 3 courses globally. Other specialty certifications and non-certification training will be added in 2018. To request a 2018 course, click here.
