South Boundary Trail 164

Taos, NM

The best backcountry, all-day ride in New Mexico! Usually ridden from the Angel Fire side to the Taos side, this trail descends almost 4500 feet over 25 miles, passing through a variety of terrain types, from high-alpine aspen groves to pine forest loam to the loose, dusty 'El Nogal' part of the trail. There are a number of loops that can be ridden, but the most popular ride is a shuttle up to Garcia Park and then a pedal to the high point followed by the descent all the way back to Taos.

High altitude, no cell service, limited signage and a big day. Definitely a true backcountry experience!

High speeds, loose rock, dust and varying terrain types make this one of the most technical trails in NM. There are a few sections that require intermediate level skills to navigate and many people will end up walking those sections.

Even if you take the easiest option and shuttle up to Garcia Park, you still climb a couple hundred feet and are likely to be out for at least 4 hours. And no matter how you do it, you'll finish the ride with tired arms and a huge grin!
