Planning Trails for Growth in Prescott Valley, AZ

Planning Trails for Growth in Prescott Valley, AZ

Establishing a definitive trail plan that identifies your community’s opportunity for trail networks and interconnectivity through town is a vital step in the planning process. As population continues to boom in certain parts of the country, development is taking place at an alarming rate. Approaching community leaders with an idea of how trails can benefit the area is not only an excellent way to show the value of trails, but also to get community buy in.

In Prescott Valley, AZ. community trail advocates are learning this firsthand. Situated just east of Prescott, Prescott Valley is growing quickly. With prime development property, easy access to I-17, and close proximity to many great recreational opportunities, it’s a great place to call home. Meanwhile, only 7 miles away, the town of Prescott is a trails destination, boasting an extensive network of well designed and maintained singletrack. Prescott Valley wants to follow suit. Armed with many firsthand examples of how trails benefited their sistertown, concerned citizens gathered to help bring trail development into the periphery in the booming growth. The time is ripe for locals to identify opportunities for trails throughout the subdivisions, big box stores, and parking lots.

Our weekend was highlighted by an excellent turnout for our Trail Building School with more than 40 enthusiastic volunteers in attendance from both Prescott Valley and neighboring Prescott. Local volunteer group “Over The Hill Gang” had an impressive showing and helped lend some of their extensive trailbuilding knowledge to our afternoon field session. A new reroute on a historically unsustainable trail will help show Prescott Valley decision makers how sustainable trails can fit in a comprehensive plan while improving outdoor access and connectedness to surrounding trails.

Thanks to Pat and Brian of Prescott Valley Parks and Recreation, Prescott Mountain Bike Alliance, the Over the Hill Gang, and everyone else who made it out for our weekend in beautiful Prescott Valley. We look forward to seeing many great things in the area!
