Southwest Region Fall Update

Project Updates from Patrick

Big Bear Lake, CA - Trail design has started in the San Bernardino National Forest! IMBA Trail Solutions specialist Shane Wilson landed at Big Bear Lake, CA, in September for three weeks to review the Skyline area and to begin designing the new singletrack system there before the snow flies. We expect to have a volunteer day there this fall, do a lot of planning over the winter and jump into trail construction in spring 2013.

Calliente, NV - I recently met with the Bureau of Land Management in Caliente, NV, to discuss the development of a new trail system there. We are very early in the discussion stages of this concept and see that there is significant potential to develop a large-scale, multi-ability trail network there, given the vast landscape, the varied terrain and the ease of access from Las Vegas, which is 2.5 hours to the south. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.

Prescott, AZ - I expect to hear soon about a grant application requesting $100,000 from the Recreational Trails Fund to complete the next section of the Prescott Circle Trail, to the east of town. We’ll know about that in late October, and if funding is approved, we’ll get started in spring 2013.

San Diego, CA - We are continuing to develop a bike park concept, including recently meeting with some potential funders and checking out a couple of locations for suitability. Similarly in Phoenix, AZ, we are working on a bike park idea with the Gravity Riders Organization of Arizona and expect to have a designer in town in November to assess a couple of sites and develop designs to present to the local land managers.

IMBA Chapter News - New Additions in Arizona and California

On the chapter front, we are pleased to welcome the Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers (CCCMB) into the IMBA Chapter program, representing the lead advocates in San Luis Obispo, CA. Elsewhere in California, it’s great to have SHARE-MTB in Orange County join the chapter program, with Idyllwild Cycling up in the San Jacinto Mountains planning to enroll onto the program in fall 2012. In Arizona, we also look forward to the Sonoran Desert Mountain Bicyclists joining the growing chapter program in fall/winter 2012.
