As the holidays approach, we here at IMBA start to feel a little bit like Santa Claus. Especially where the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew is concerned, since this is the time of year where we decide who gets visits from our team of traveling trail ambassadors. Thanks to our kind sponsors, Subaru, The North Face, Trek and Yakima, we're able to award these visits free of charge.
We get so many good applications that it's not really a matter of naughty or nice. Instead, it's based on a complicated matrix of need, weather, timing, and driving logistics.
So while I spend my December going cross-eyed from staring at maps and calendars, it's all worth it to reward hardworking bike clubs and land managers with the assistance they need.
Jesse and Lori will begin their season of giving in Tucson, AZ, working with the Sonoran Desert Mountain Bicyclists to improve trails in the Mount Lemmon trail system. After other Southwest visits, including Scottsdale, Sedona and Kingman, they'll move through southern Utah and Las Vegas on their way to California.
From there, they'll visit folks in Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Colorado. The holidays will be long behind them by then, but they won't let up on handing out help. They'll push through North Dakota, the Midwest, the Great Lakes and the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast regions before finally wrapping up 2013 in the South.
It's Christmas year round, even if their Outback lacks a shiny red nose.
