IMBA Trail Solutions recently returned to Hong Kong to work with the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. The AFCD oversees the country parks and special area in and around Hong Kong: think the National Park Service in the U.S. Mountain biking has exploded in Hong Kong with van after van of riders doing shuttle laps in the parks. AFCD is taking this increased demand head-on and planning new, more-sustainable and enjoyable routes for the mountain bikers. Being charged with both management and conservation of the country parks, AFCD contacted IMBA Trail Solutions to help them align their two goals. Trail Specialists HM Lim and Chris Kehmeier started the visit by leading a four-day trail design, planning, and construction workshop for 20+ AFCD managers and staff. The workshop consisted of conceptual trail planning, corridor flagging, pin flagging trail alignments and finally construction of those alignments. The class culminated with the AFCD staff demonstrating their newfound knowledge by designing a test alignment under the studious eye of HM.
In addition to the class, HM and Chris designed a new trail alignment that bypasses both an illegal entrance and illegal fall line trail that connects to the popular, and legal, Ho Pui trail. The construction was kicked off with an awesome volunteer day with AFCD and the Hong Kong Mountain Bike Association. Ten volunteers arrived in the morning ready for some steep side slope, big bench cutting fun. Working together, over 100 metres of brand new trail was constructed. It was a great way to start the new two-kilometre alignment. More volunteer days are planned next weekend with the hopes of even more trail getting built!
