Moab is an icon for outdoor recreation; it’s known around the world. This past Wednesday this small town in Southern Utah hosted Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar who stopped to speak to a diverse crowd about outdoor recreation, conservation, and oil/gas development.
Member of IMBA’s Government Affairs team attended the public meeting, held at the Moab Adventure Center in the downtown area of the sports mecca.
“I came to see with my own eyes, the wonderful places you have in Utah” shared Mr. Salazar. After brief opening statements, the Secretary answered questions from the crowd. During the discussion he emphasized the economic value of outdoor recreation, noting that the outdoor recreation sector is one of the few areas that has seen growth in an otherwise tough economy. Mr. Salazar went on to say that the current administration sees a great opportunity for job development in this area.
Similar to Moab, IMBA has seen great success across the country with the development of outdoor recreation, specifically trail systems. Two recent projects, Cuyuna Lakes Trail System and Raystown Lake, are shining examples of how fostering outdoor opportunities can create positive impacts for communities that have seen other industries fade away.
