Other news, updates and events from the region:
Chapter growth in the southwest — In the most recent chapter enrollment class, Idyllwild Cycling in Idyllwild, CA, and the Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers (CCCMB) in San Luis Obispo, CA, joined the IMBA Chapter Program. In the next round, the San Diego Mountain Bike Association (SDMBA) will enroll, adding to the good news and further increasing the strength of the mountain bike advocacy movement in the southwest. A big thanks to these new chapters and here's to more and better trails!
Southern California Mountain Bike Summit — We are currently planning the summit to be held in beautiful Idyllwild, CA, May 31-June 2. The event will include workshops on trail planning and design, bike park development, fundraising and some great trail rides up in the San Jacinto Mountains. Registration and more details will be available soon, so stay tuned for additional info.
Trail planning in Caliente, NV — We are continuing to work with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Caliente with the goal of developing a large-scale, all-abilities singletrack trail network that could become a southwest regional mountain bike destination. In 2013, we plan to spend a lot of time in the field continuing to understand the vast landscape in Caliente, reviewing the potential locations for new trails and tying it all together with a conceptual plan.
Phoenix Bike Park — The initial design of the Phoenix bike park will be made available in late January, at which time IMBA and the Gravity Riders Association of Arizona (GRO-AZ) will meet with the City of Phoenix Department of Parks and Recreation to move the project through the approval process. We will also share the design with supporters and potential funders as part of the overall development of the project.
Tonto National Forest — In east-central Arizona, there is an ongoing public input process to gather ideas on the future management of recreation facilities within Tonto National Forest. IMBA and affiliated clubs and chapters will be attending these meetings and giving our input on the issues at hand. This is a great opportunity for local mountain bike advocates to show up and give their input.
Rivers and Trials Conservation Assistance Program (RTCA): Sedona, AZ — A series of monthly public meeting is ongoing in Sedona to gather input from local trail users and provide information from the USFS. The most recent meeting included presentations from the USFS archaeologist and biologist, which provided insightful information on trail planning and the need for a thorough process in order to protect endangered plant and animal species, along with the vast wealth of archeological resources in the Sedona area. The next public meeting is Thursda, February 21 and will include the IMBA presentation "Better Living Through Trails."
Bell Built Grants — CHAPTERS and CLUBS: Don't miss the IMBA-Bell Built grants program, which has $100,000 available for downhill trails, flow trails and bike parks. Talk to your local land managers and your IMBA Regional Director (me — patrick [dot] kell [at] imba [dot] com (Patrick Kell)), find a project that is suitable and submit your application! A huge thanks to Bell Helmets for supporting this project.
There are also several events going on throughout the southwest. Here are a few for your calendar:
The Epic Rides Whiskey Off Road is coming to Prescott, AZ, April 26-28. Choose the 15, 25 or 50 mile course, enjoy downtown Prescott and support the Prescott Mountain Bike Alliance, the local IMBA chapter.
The following weekend (May 3-5), head to the Sedona Singletrack Celebration, an amazing opportunity to ride in the heart of red rock country in Sedona, AZ.
We hope to see you on the trails and at these trainings, races and festivals over the coming months!
