First Phase of Purpose-Built Beginner Trails Completed Near Richmond, VA

Richmond, VA, IMBA chapter rvaMORE and Trail Dynamics recently completed 4.5 miles of fresh beginner singletrack at Pocahontas State Park in Chesterfield, VA, (pictured). This addition is the second phase of a planned, stacked-loop trail system—completed by IMBA Trail Solutions—for the Swift Creek area of the park. These new trails add to the recently completed handcycle-optimized gateway grail and Bell Built grant-supported flow trail, both built by IMBA Trail Solutions.

The concept plan for the Pocahontas trail system details an additional 18 miles of trail that will be completed in several phases. Trail development for Pocahontas State Park is a collaborative effort among several groups including Friends of Pocahontas State Park, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Virginia DCR, rvaMORE, IMBA Trail Solutions, Chesterfield County and many others.

Pocahontas State Park already boasts more than 20 miles of singletrack trails that get thousands of users each year and is the most visited state park in Virginia.

Opportunities to Expand Riding in New River National Park (WV)

IMBA’s Fayetteville, WV, chapter, New River Bicycle Union (NRBU), is currently working with the National Park Service on new trails in the New River National Park. The park recently completed a five-year trails management and development plan that outlines up to 40 miles of new trail around the park that will create new loop options as well as connect several communities and surrounding state parks.

NRBU is working with the county commission, town council, WV Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and other local stakeholders to identify funding streams and prioritize the trail development needs.

Currently, the town of Fayetteville has about 20 miles of trail at the Arrowhead trail system that is accessible from town. If you’re looking for a great place to ride and relax, check it out!

Welcome to the IMBA Chapter Program!

I’d like to welcome the latest mountain bike groups to affiliate with the IMBA Chapter Program: Trail Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, PA, and Southern Virginia Mountain Bike Association out of Danville, VA! I’m excited to have them be a part of the IMBA family and expect to see great things from them in the near future.

Out and About

I will be at Windham Mountain Resort on July 11 for opening day with Trek and the Windham Area Recreation Foundation. There will be drawings for swag, demo bikes, special IMBA member benefits and tons more! If you’re in the upper Mid-Atlantic region, come on out and join us!
