They call it Hawaiian Ice — not the local “shave ice” you get in a cup, though you could say this dirt is just as sweet. Trail Solutions’ Jason Wells is hard at work on Maui on a six-week project that includes pump tracks, a skills area and flow trails in the Kahakapao Recreation Area near Makawao. The soil is cherry red, tacky and delicious to ride but if it rains, you’ll find out how it got its nickname.
Trail Solutions has partnered with the local IMBA Chapter — Maui Mountain Bike Coalition — and Forest Service Builders, Trails Unlimited, to build on their great work last summer. Now the team is adding:
- Two pump tracks
- A skills area with ten progressive features
- A “keiki” zone for the kids with teeter totters, rollers, a-frames and berms
- A downhill flow-trail expansion that will bring the total length to about two miles, and will feature a 10-foot tall 30-foot long curved wall ride with air-on/air-off options.
This adds to the six-mile singletrack loop designed by Trail Solutions’ Joey Klein a few years ago. The new gravity trail will begin from the top of the singletrack loop and will be sure to satisfy the tastes of advanced riders and beginners alike. “Everything on the new flow trail is rollable, but advanced riders will be able to make jumps doubles or send a 20-foot table top, while a kid could enjoy them on a strider bike,” said Wells. “With these new additions, this is a pretty darn legit trail system manageable for all skill levels.”
Located 3.8 miles (and 1,300’ feet elevation gain) outside of Makawao, riders who want to experience these trails can find bike rentals and service at shops all over the island. This project will add to these trails’ reputation as a local’s gem, and visitor’s destination.
