New Twist to Mountain Bicycle-Friendly Landscape in Hong Kong
Trails can never be better when land managers, riders, and stakeholder start to comprehend the existence and need for sustainable singletrack.
This May, IMBA Trail Solution's Tony Boone and fellow Asia-based trail partner HM Lim from Dirtraction worked in Hong Kong to present a comprehensive trailbuilding workshop, covering two full days of classroom lecture. In attendance were almost 70 staff of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) of Hong Kong and 60 others trail users including riders from Hong Kong Mountain Biking Association (HKMBA).
Armed with the knowledge of sustainable trail building techniques, the staff and riders combined forces in the field for a week, building a section of beginner trail at the popular Twisk trail head, within Tai Lam Country Park. The short beginner loop allowed trailbuilding techniques to be perfected by the various staff and created new trail opportunities for riders to hone their skills in a safe environment.
Gravity riders were not left out of the effort as the crew worked on a short section of intermediate gravity trail, packed with fun rollers, flowy turns, and a rock garden, demonstrating new ways to build and enjoy flow-based gravity trails in the semi-tropical Hong Kong climate.
