All trails have a “rhythm”, and flow-based trails are where mountain bikers find their groove. These trails take mountain bikers on a terrain-induced roller coaster experience, with little pedaling and braking necessary. Flow trails typically contain banked turns, rolling terrain, various types of jumps, and consistent and predictable surfaces; conspicuously absent are abrupt corners or obstacles. As a rider carves back and forth, and up and down, he or she develops a rhythm and soon flows down the trail.
Trail Solutions has long been at the forefront of flow trails, building them even before there was a term to describe it. We continue to advance the concept, including our recent partnership with mountain biking legend Hans Rey to create the Flow Country Trails program.
Flow is more than about trails, though; it is about tapping into the intrinsic kinetic energy of the natural terrain in which we play. This recent article in Elevation Outdoors Magazine explores the deep, down reasons that we grin like fools after floating through a beautiful piece of singletrack.
