Assessing Trails in the 49th State

Assessing Trails in the 49th State

Trail Solutions recently visited Anchorage, Alaska to assess the local trails. Teaming up with Singletrack Advocates (the local mountain bike club) and the Municipality of Anchorage, TS focused on the Hillside system and Kincaid Park. In addition to assessing existing conditions for sustainability, user friendliness and safety; Trail Specialist  Chris Kehmeier had to keep an eye out for local wildlife.

Both Hillside and Kincaid see year around use. The singletrack trails stay busy in the long summer days by runners, hikers and mountain bikers.  During the winter both areas are even busier with ski traffic utilizing purpose built corridors and snow-shoers and snow bikers keeping to the singletrack trails.

Singletrack Advocates has been hard at work since an IMBA Trail Care Crew visit way back in 2005. The first trail they built was a textbook singletrack trail connecting two ski trails. Since then the club has built a solid relationship with the city and provided the labor, planning, funding, project management and maintenance for over 20 miles of fun, purpose built trails.

Making the most of the long days and the fact that IMBA was in Alaska; Mapping Specialist, Leslie Kehmeier, mapped and documented trails in Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula. Eight days of riding and mapping resulted in over 100 miles of new trail being added to MTB Project.
