Black Canyon Trail, Arizona

Dimensions: 18" to 4-wheel drive vehicle

The historic Black Canyon Trail (BCT) provides a critical link to the past and future of Arizona. The use of the canyon has predominantly altered from a livestock driveway to a recreational amenity, providing a backcountry experience that is accessible to the growing populations of Phoenix, Prescott, and communities along the I-17 corridor. The BLM contracted with Trail Solutions to assess the current trail layout and make recommendations for its improvement. Read more...

Northern Kettle Moraine State Forest, Wisconsin

Wisconsin DNR employed Trail Solutions to design 15 miles of new mountain bike trail at the Greenbush and New Fane trails areas. The existing trails open to mountain bikes at these locations was routed on the 12-foot wide nordic ski trails. Not only was this situation not satisfying the singletrack experience being sought by the mountain bikers, the fall line ski trails were beginning to erode from summer use and also encouraged very high speeds near many blind corners. Seeking to develop more summer trail opportunity without resorting to using their world-class nordic trail system, as well as providing training opportunity for local athletes and recreational opportunity for regional residents, the Nordic Heritage Center hired Trail Solutions to design a stacked loop trail system with trails suitable for those brand new to the sport to those not afraid of jumping off vertical rock faces. Cheyenne Mountain State Park, Colorado

Trail Solutions teamed with lead construction contractor, Arrowhead Trails, and the local IMBA-affiliated Medicine Wheel mountain bike club to design 15 miles of new trail in brand new Cheyenne Mountain State Park outside Colorado Springs. The contracting crews worked with the club to design technically challenging, narrow singletrack, then worked together to design trail that would bring trail users up to the best views from the park in a sustainable manner. Silver Mountain Resort, Idaho

Eager to increase summer use at the resort and help develop the local Kellogg, Idaho economy, Silver Mountain Resort started planning a base area development. However, the resort did not have an extensive summer use trail system and no way to connect the base development with the land that they manage starting midway up the mountain. Lake Lafayette Trails, Florida

At first glance, the new Lafayette Heritage Trail City Park in Tallahassee looks like a quaint neighborhood park with a lake view and a small kiddy playground. In reality, it is a premier North Florida trailhead at the center point of a new mixed-use trail system that branches out over 10 miles in both directions covering nearly 2,000 acres of contiguous parklands and conservation easements. Southern Kettle Moraine State Forest, Wisconsin

With a narrow corridor, sometimes only 150 feet wide, between the Emma Carlin and John Muir trail systems and four, single-use trails to pack in, Wisconsin DNR was having some difficulty. Mountain bike use is managed in a uni-directional fashion in the Emma Carlin and John Muir systems. Therefore the connector corridor required two mountain bike trails to eliminate bi-directional travel. Read more...

Whatís wrong with a trail system consisting exclusively of old logging roads? It doesnít provide the experience that potential visitors will seek out and maintenance is only possible with heavy machinery. Seeking to help Maryland DNR improve visitation in this gorgeous Eastern Shore park as well as add more metro-DC riding possibilities, the IMBA-affiliated Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts (MORE) secured a Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grant to rebuild the trail system at Rosaryville State Park. The Truckee Meadows Trail Association (TMTA) secured a Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grant to reconstruct a trail from Rancho San Rafael County Park in Reno up to the ridge overlooking the City. Formerly, the trail tread was located mostly in the garbage-filled intermittent Evanís Creek channel, but the countyís stream restoration efforts required relocating the trail. Read more...

The IMBA-affiliated Southwest Idaho Mountain Biking Association (SWIMBA) worked with City of Boise staff, Tamarack Resort, and local supporters to reinvigorate a dirt jumping area in Willow Lane Park. SWIMBA hired Trail Solutions to develop the plans and provide the construction know-how, working with local dirt jumping aficionados to give the park the finishing touches and maintenance expertise to make the jumping area a permanent part of the park scene. Long Cane Trails of South Carolina subcontracted to Trail Solutions on the redesign of the Long Cane Horse Trail, part of which runs through a National Scenic Area, in order to ensure sustainable construction of a trail with serious drainage concerns in micaceous soils. Combining earthen causeway and drainage basin work, the trail has remained dry even during 3" rain storm events. Read more...

Bruce County is developing a trail and freeride area intended to provide a broad level of experiences, from introducing novices to technical riding to challenging highly skilled riders. The County hired Trail Solutions to provide education and instruction on proper techniques as well as assisting in some of the structure construction. Read more...
