Sample Press Release

Promoting your Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew visit is important. Please customize this sample press release and send it to your local media (newspapers, TV, radio) to publicize the Trail Care Crew visit. You may want to do this in two phases - once about three weeks before the event so locals learn of the event and mark their calendars, and again the week of the event to encourage people to come. It always helps to follow up with a phone call to the editor or key contact to ensure your story makes it to print.

Follow these simple instructions:

1) Cut and paste - Copy the press release text into a Word or email document.

2) Customize - Look for text that is in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS and replace it with information specific to your event.

3) Get media list - Contact Spencer ( ) for IMBA's detailed list of media in your area. Or go to congress.org and do a search using your zip code.

4) Distribute press release - Mail, fax, or email your press release to local newspapers, and television and radio stations.

5) Follow up - Call each media outlet to notify them of the press release and ask if you can answer any questions. Sell the story and convince them to run it.

6) Mail clippings to IMBA - Monitor local media, collect all clippings and send to Avery at IMBA, P.O. Box 7578, Boulder, Colorado, 80306. We send copies to Subaru of America to demonstrate the value of Subaru's investment in mountain biking and trailbuilding. When clipping newspaper articles, please also cut out and send the front page masthead.

Thanks for your efforts to help publicize your Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew visit. The more media coverage you get, the more successful your event will be.

If you have any questions, contact Spencer ( ) at IMBA.

INSERT YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION Visiting Trail Experts Will Inspire Local Trailbuilding
Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew Coming to INSERT TOWN NAME INSERT CITY, INSERT DATE - The International Mountain Bicycling Association's (IMBA) Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew will be in INSERT TOWN NAME, INSERT VISIT DATE to talk trails, teach people proper trailbuilding technique, and spend quality time digging in the dirt. The visit is one of 70 stops on the 2007 schedule. Everyone is invited to attend the weekend's events.

The award-winning Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew program includes two full-time, professional teams of trail experts who travel North America year-round, leading IMBA Trailbuilding Schools, meeting with government officials and land managers, and working with IMBA-affiliated groups to improve mountain biking opportunities. IMBA's Crews have led more than 1,000 trail projects since the program debuted in 1997.

The Crews teach "sustainable" trailbuilding, which means building trails that last a long time and require minimal maintenance. This helps reduce trail damage, protects the environment, and enhances visitor enjoyment.

Most Trail Care Crew visits last four days, allowing time to assess local trails, host an evening event at a bike shop, conduct a two-day Trailbuilding School, and ride with the locals. Now in its eighth year, the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew program is more popular than ever.

The Crews travel in 2007 Subaru Outbacks provided by Subaru of America - the company that has been IMBA's leading sponsor since 1997.

The Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew program has inspired great volunteer trailwork across the U.S. and abroad - a big help to government agencies and land managers who have limited funding for trail construction and upkeep.

As a direct result, there are now thousands of new and improved trails in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico and several European countries. That's a pretty impressive record.

Coming to INSERT TOWN NAME are Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew members Kristin Butcher and Ryan Schutz. Butcher and Schutz hail from Deerfield Beach, Florida, where they created ClubMud, an IMBA-affiliated "trail maintenance, advocacy and merrymaking" organization. They helped lead the charge to gain approval for freeride trails and technical trail features in Broward County parks, oversaw the construction of two freeride areas, and helped organize a bevy of cycling events. Prior to joining the Trail Care Crew, Kristin was a successful and multi-patented software engineer at an international telecommunications company. Ryan has earned a Masters in Urban Planning, has a passion for trail advocacy and spent the last 5 years working in GIS municipal land planning.

Coming to INSERT TOWN NAME are Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew members Anna Laxague and Jason Wells. Laxague and Wells hail from the Pacific Northwest. They bring a unique combination of professional experience to the program - both taught environmental education, and have worked at bike shops and as mountain bike guides. They're also committed volunteers who have logged hundreds of hours building trails and performing outreach work with a host of public agencies. They worked as kayak river guides in Hood River for several years and will hopefully find some time to paddle a few rivers on their way around the country, in addition to riding as many trails as possible.
