The Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew focus on technical trail features in southern and central Florida.
Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew leaders, Lora Woolner and Mark Schmidt, led Trailbuilding Schools at Markham Park, outside of Fort Lauderdale, and Santos Park, near Ocala, March 18-22.
Club Mud, recently featured in IMBA's Freeride Guide, has brought technically challenging trail to the elevation challenged state of Florida at Markham Park. Man-made hills, limestone piled high in a highway dredging project, provide steep elevation gain found no place else in Florida besides Markham Park. Sustaining these steep hills despite the high use in this urban area has been the major challenge for Club Mud trailbuilders. The Crew spent the weekend teaching about trails, examining alternative armoring techniques, and riding some of the sweet trails at Markham Park and Quiet Waters. Thanks to FreeRideSouth.com for providing lunches!
The weekend culminated with a Monday land manager Trailbuilding school hosted by the Florida Office of Greenways and Trails at the Santos Trailhead. The school brought together land managers from around the region, the Ocala Mountain Bike Association and the Southwest Association of Mountain Pedalers for a day of trail education and risk management discussion.
