"What I Did On My Vacation"
After twenty-two hours of rolling up Interstate mileage we arrived in Harrisonburg, VA, the gateway to the Appalachain Front. A couple of days couch surfing and backyard camping kept us nice and safe and let us enjoy some care free days bumming around a college town.
Then we headed out to the edge of the forest and Stokesville. A couple of days pre-riding parts of the Shenandoah 100 course and helping set up for the big day. Finally Sunday dawned and we rolled out 200 strong into the early light and mist. Finally the rain had stopped and as the miles rolled by and the hours drifted past, the sun came out and a wonderful day appeared. By Checkpoint Four (mile 53) Rich had caught up to a cadre of locals and rode in the slipstream of "team green" for the rest of the race. The final downhill off of Baldy slipped into the mist and over the greasy rocks as it twisted it self down, up, and around in true Appalachian style. A full three days of riding all in one big day. Amazing.
A couple days of slacking and doing some work cleaning up the campground had us ready to go check out Slatyfork, WV for a day. There were rumours that the heckler trails had developed some new features. Oh yeah, bring on the ramps and drops. Rich still had trouble with some of the pieces he'd built last year, but the new ramps we're a blast. Yeah. Nothing like that rooty, rocky, slimey WV singletrack to bring out the rest.
So where is Jen? Standing behind the camera and taking it easy. "I manned Checkpoint One early in the morning and then helped out at Checkponts 3 & 4, giving riders food, water, moral support and even a tire. Much more enjoyable and a lot less painful than riding 100 miles. We both had a blast this weekend.
Peace,
