What would we do without trails?

Chino Hills Trails Project

On Cinco de Mayo at Chino Hills State Park, CA we met up with Park Ranger Eddy Guaracha and Jim Meyers of TRAILS4ALL. Jim arranged yet another one of his awesome trail workdays and Gene Mezereny of REI was there to sponsor the event.

We hiked three miles of the East Fence-line Trail looking at solutions to eroded sections and possible maintenance projects for Saturday's trails project. The trail was overgrown with six-foot tall, wild mustard, which made the trail impassable. The vegetation also made it difficult to see the rattlesnakes, scorpions, ticks and mountain lions that dine in these lush, rolling hills.

Our first goal would be to clear the wild mustard and then restore the tread. To keep volunteers safe from all things that sting and bite, we decided to send a county work crew ahead to clear the vegetation.

Saturday we had a great turnout of forty-five volunteers from many organizations including local cub scouts, Trails-4-All, REI, SHARE, CORBA, NATRAC, Chino Hills Mounted Assistance Unit, the Bicycle Assistance Unit and Mitsubishi. The volunteers worked passionately, opening up even more single-track in the beautiful hills of Southern California.

This spring we had the privilege of meeting with members of several other mountain biking clubs and trail enthusiasts including: Forest Knolls Freewheelers, East Bay Trails Coallition, Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz, San Diego Mountain Bike Association Warrior Society, Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers and the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coallition.

We visited over fifteen trail systems that included California State Parks, City Parks, US Forest Service and Open Space parks. We worked with or talked to most of the land managers who care for these great sanctuaries and understand their concerns. We were amazed at the dedication of the clubs in California and their devotion to the trails, environment and community. Next year we hope to lead several trail seminars bringing trail users and land managers together to share ideas. California is a massive state with some of the best trails in the world, we'll be happy to get back soon.

Thank you,
Joey and Kathy, TCC2
