What would we do without trails?

Trail Improvements on Gooseberry Mesa

We returned to one of our favorite places to play; Gooseberry Mesa south of Zion National Park, Utah. Gooseberry is a gorgeous mesa loaded with strawberry sherbet colored slick-rock, connected by 20-miles of technical single-track that slaloms through the junipers.

Locals have been riding here for years and now mtn bikers from all over the world will be planning trips to Gooseberry. Thanks should be given to Mike and Morgan Harris, Dean and Patsy of Bike Zion, Jim Crisp and Cimarron Chacon of the St. George BLM office for their patience, creativity and teamwork to make this trail system a success.

Earlier this year Dean, Mike and Morgan each received a Certificate of Awards from the BLM for their volunteer efforts. Since our last visit, Gooseberry has a newly- surfaced parking area, a trailhead kiosk and more trail signage. Dean Williamson invited us for a weekend trail work session.

Ten volunteers including IMBA Utah State Rep Jon Gallagher worked on trail marking and signage on the South Rim, Hidden Canyon and North Rim trails. We surfed slick-rock as we marked trail, enjoying the rhythm of the flowing sandstone. Over the next few days, we looked at nearby trail systems with Cimarron and Dean discussing issues, challenges and the future of trails in the Gooseberry Mesa area.

We hope to return soon, to the "trail that keeps on giving" and the " area that will make you a better rider".

Thanks,
Joey and Kathy, TCC2
