The TCC Goes Wawayanda
(June 14) Up in North Jersey, right next to the New York border lies Wawayanda State Park (it's up way way yonder...). Blessed with terrain and rock fields that bring West Virginia to mind this park has miles of technical trail to ride. Park Superintendent Bob Goodman works hard to keep the trails in shape and keeps a firm hand on the park management.
On this weekend we were up at dawn to be able to meet Jim and Lee Schwarz at the trailhead at 7am. It was critical we head into the woods early to asses the wet spots on the trail and develop a plan for the day so that no time would be wasted when the volunteers arrived. A couple miles of riding, lots of stomping around in the mud, climbing around boulders, 50 pin flags and much discussion later we had a plan in hand. Back to the trailhead to get Super Bob's OK and to pick up our eager volunteers, hard hats and tools. Soon we were working hard to rebuild the troubled trail section.
Rock was a theme of the day. We struck rock, moved rock, smashed rock, and built with rock. We labored long past our recommended stopping point, at which time those folks with families and other lives departed. The remaining crew hammered on 'till the section was finished. Just as we stumbled back to the car preparing to ready our bodies and bikes for a well-deserved ride, the skies opened and we received open air showers thanks to a massive deluge.
Unable to ride we heartily thanked Lee, Jim, Sarah, Mike and the other folks that helped out before piling in the Subaru and heading west through the Delaware Water Gap toward a hot shower and a warm bed somewhere down the highway...
