Ric and Holly Head North To Canada, Eh?
November 1998
Thanks to a special Subaru grant Ric and Holly picked up a digital camera on their way to Washington and British Columbia, Canada. Here are some of the shots taken during their week in the Northwest. In Washington the crew met with Port Townsend mountain bikers to work on trails at Gibbs Lake County Park. They also met with the County parks supervisor Warren Steurer to discuss future trail expansion opportunities. Thanks to George Binney for the great salmon BBQ, and to Bob Chung and Lowell Jons of PT Cyclery for all your help in making the visit a success.
Up in Canada, TCC2 first arrived in Victoria, BC where the South Island Mountain Bike Society (SIMBS) arranged to host a two day workshop on trail design and maintenance by Ric and Holly. Special thanks to Pat Wade and Henry Lee for organizing the event. The locals proudly showed off the trails at Mt. Work-Hartland that feature some challenging riding, including a teeter-totter! This was but a taste of the trails that make the North Shore of Vancouver legendary in the degree of difficulty built out of planks, boardwalks, drop-offs and ladders. Downhill trials is the term used to describe these extreme trails that require a combination of audacity, body armor, and bomber bikes to take it on.
Ric and Holly were honored to join the North Shore Mountain Bike Association on the first sanctioned volunteer trail work day on Cypress Mountain. The turn out was incredible with well over 100 volunteers coming to help rebuild sections on the trail known as "Coiler." The enthusiasm was almost overwhelming with club crew leaders and the trail care crew scrambling to lay out projects ahead of the army of volunteers. The next day was spent in a forum with land managers and trail users developing new solutions to trail planning and cooperation between groups in the Vancouver area. Hats off to Ken Neave, Lee Lau, and Candace Shadley for making it happen!
