2002 IMBA Mountain Bike Advocacy Summit Announcements

UK Forest Enterprise/IMBA Partnership

The United Kingdom's Forest Enterprise is a key initiative of the UK Forestry Commission. IMBA and Forest Enterprise began working together in 2000 and are now partnering to teach sustainable trailbuilding techniques, educate Forestry Commission officials about mountain bike management, support volunteer trail patrol training and develop stronger grassroots mountain bike groups throughout the U.K.

Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance (RTCA)/IMBA Memorandum of Understanding

RTCA, a branch of the National Park Service, has 35 offices and 90 staff around the country. They help communities organize and mobilize to realize their trail, greenway and riverfront goals. IMBA and RTCA just signed their first memorandum of understanding working to develop urban trails parks, design trail systems and work on new trail projects until 2007.

Army Corps of Engineers/ IMBA Memorandum of Understanding

The Army Corps of Engineers supports more annual recreation visits than any other U.S. federal agency. IMBA clubs work on dozens of trail project on Corps land so it is only natural we partner together. IMBA and the Corps will sign a Memorandum of Understanding to focus on three to five trail work projects each year that improve off-road trail opportunities.

Bureau of Land Management Mountain Bike Strategy

The BLM is asking for feedback from IMBA Summit participants to help the agency develop a new Mountain Bike Management Strategy. BLM manages 263 million acres of public land - nearly one-eighth of the Unites States.

Bureau of Land Management/ IMBA Assistance Agreement

IMBA and the BLM have partnered since 1990 to create new trail opportunities and bring out the best in mountain biking. IMBA and the BLM recently renewed this commitment until 2007.

Bikes Belong Grant to Off-Road Project

Bikes Belong is the industry organization that helps build bike facilities and infrastructure by providing locals with seed money to leverage federal transportation dollars. In the last three years, Bikes Belong awarded $336,000 to projects that have helped generate $183 million for better bicycle facilities. Few Bikes Belong grants to date have had an off-road component. Today, Gary Sjoquist, Quality Bicycle Products and Bikes Belong board member, and Rich Olken, Bikes Belong executive director are here to award the first major grant to a mountain bike project. IMBA/Clif Bar Club Trail Preservation Grants

Clif Bar's commitment to mountain bicyclists, advocacy and trailwork is exceptional. Clif Bar is supporting four IMBA programs this year, including IMBA/Clif Bar Trail Preservation Grants for 2002. Twelve club winners will receive $500 this year. The first six will be announced at the summit.

IMBA's Building Better Trails Book

IMBA and Interbike recently published a 72-page book "Building Better Trails: Designing, Construction and Maintaining Outstanding Trails." This concise publication offers step-by-step instructions for trail design and building challenging, technical trails that are environmentally sustainable. It's also available as a PDF.
