What Projects Will RTP Fund?
The Recreational Trails Program provides funds to states to develop and maintain recreational trails, trail education and training programs, trail patrols, and trail-related facilities for both non-motorized and motorized recreational trail uses. Projects can include:
- Maintenance and restoration of existing trails
- Development and rehabilitation of trailside and trailhead facilities and trail linkages. Examples: Relevant signage such as directional, safety and etiquette signs, and bathroom facilities.
- Purchase and lease of recreational trail construction equipment. Examples: Common trail maintenance tools, machines such as a Ditch Witch or Sweco, lumber and materials for sign post, bridges and kiosks.
- Construction of new trails. Examples: Contracting with professional trail building crews or hiring a seasonal trail crew.
- Educational seminars and workshops. Examples: trail building workshops.
- Acquisition of easements and simple title to property for recreational trails or corridors
- Trail assessment
- Youth conservation corps projects
- Non-law enforcement trail safety and trail-use monitoring patrol programs
- Trail training
- Publications
- Switchback construction
- Bridges
- Trailhead kiosks
- Trail markers
- Limited payment to the state for administrating the project
* Note: States are limited to 5 percent of their apportionments for all education projects such as: educational seminars and workshops, trail building workshops, non-law enforcement trail safety and trail-use monitoring patrol programs, trail training, publications, etc.
