California State Parks Trails Policy: Opening Lines of Communication
California State Parks, steward of nearly 1.4 million acres and 3,000 miles of non-motorized trails, has instituted a new user-friendly Trails Policy. The new rules set a terrific example for land managers everywhere by instituting more meaningful public involvement and interaction in the entire trails planning process. Via the new regulations, mountain bikers across California can initiate communications with their local state park on a variety of trail issues, including possibly gaining access to new trails. No longer are riders left guessing why they can't ride certain trails; park superintendents are required to respond to inquiries and explain their decisions.
