We are pleased to announce that the NMBP certification program will launch March 14, 2007. Before doing so, we want to communicate the details of the new exam, and its importance.
The exam will consist of multiple-choice questions pulled from a large pool, collected from a variety of sources. Each new and renewing patroller will be required to pass the exam. The questions relate to real-world situations and have clear correct answers. They address basic first aid, environmental knowledge, trailside bike repair and risk assessment. We hope the test encourages patrollers to think about situations they may face on the trail. Anyone who has gone through the NMBP handbook and undergone basic orientation with a local NMBP chapter should easily pass the exam. If someone fails the exam, we will work with the local patrol director, and/or patroller, to provide training prior to a second test. We want to ensure that everyone passes the exam.
Why are we implementing the test? Local patrol chapters, the NMBP Advisory Committee and the NMBP have been working to raise awareness about the program with other organizations, such as National Ski Patrol, Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service and National Park Service. A uniform patroller certification standard helps us build partnerships, and shows that we are able to consistently measure patrollers' training and knowledge. This will enable the NMBP to present a level of uniformity to potential partners and sponsors. Further, it will give patrollers and patrol directors a new tool to improve their knowledge and skills. We want to grow the NMBP into a stronger, more recognizable program. We want trail users, police and fire personnel, rescue teams, forest rangers and others to view NMBP members as reliable sources of aid, assistance and information.
We plan to offer the test online March 14, 2007. Once it is up, we ask that all patrollers, new and renewing, log on and take the test in order to fully activate their memberships. Until then, we ask you to renew your membership, which will make it easier for us to implement the exam next month. Please contact NMBP coordinator if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you for all of your hard work, and best of luck in the coming season.
