Got a suggestion for people's "must ride" list?

Definitely Tamarancho, the privately owned Boy Scout Camp in Marin County where eight miles of singletrack have been lovingly built by the Bicycle Trails Council of Marin. It is one of the best urban riding opportunities in the country. Riders are required to purchase a Friends of Tamarancho pass to ride the trails. It's worth it!

How about some bike vacationing tips?

Always, always, always find a local rider to show you the goods. Carry a couple gallons of water in the car. Go overboard with bike locks. Your two best friends are your riding partner and your favorite lubricant. Pat attention to both or prepare for lots of whining, squeaking, and clanking after you get the bikes off the roof. Believe the hype - slime in the tires is vital in the desert and not a bad idea in lots of other places. Finally, try to give the local bike shop some business, and remember that shop employees know bikes and trails, but generally not cuisine. If you want local food suggestions, go elsewhere. : )

Name a place where freeriding trails are working well.

It's called The Whoops! or Kenter Coaster in Brentwood, California. Open to the public, shared-use, few user conflicts, it's two miles of fire road with an endless series of table tops, gaps, hips, and wall rides. Progressively designed to put a smile on the face of beginners and big boys alike. The two developed trailheads keep the neighbors happy. Everyone lends a hand to maintain the trail. They collect rain water and soil to constantly refurbish the jumps, pack all trash out, and generally treat the area like they would grandma's china.

Where's some great riding near an interstate highway?

Ashland, Oregon is a great place to stop for a ride, but you'll end up staying four days. Visit Ashland Cycle Sport and get the beta on Mt. Ashland's 5,000 vertical feet and some help lining up a shuttle. When your legs don't spin anymore, comfort yourself with good food, theater, and rafting.
