PA Patrol Rescues Runner from Canal
Volunteering for the National Mountain Bike Patrol can lead to adventures beyond assisting lost visitors or fixing flat tires. Just ask members of the Valley Mountain Bike Patrollers of Allentown, Pennsylvania. While pitching in at the American Red Cross Lehigh River Relay Run, patroller Terry Miller rescued a racer who had passed out and fallen face down into a canal along the course. Miller quickly radioed race paramedics and stabilized the individual. The racer was fine, but with only two paramedics on duty things could have been a lot worse had the Valley Mountain Bike Patrollers not been on hand. Besides helping with local events, the group also patrols Jacobsburg State Park near Belfast, Pennsylvania. More info:
A Colorado Diamond in the Highway
It's safe to say that most mountain bikers like dirt better than pavement, but the Diamond Peaks Mountain Bike Patrol has found a way to use tarmac to their advantage. They recently joined the state's Adopt-a-Highway program for a section of the Poudre Canyon west of Fort Collins, Colorado. In return for picking up trash twice a year on a one-mile section of highway, they get their patrol name on an Adopt-a-Highway sign. The sign offers the patrol excellent exposure: it is located near several popular trailheads that the group regularly patrols.
