Winter 2003
IMBA trail specialist Joey Klein visited Australia in October 2003, to share knowledge and experience on mountain bike management, trailbuilding, conflict resolution and volunteer group mobilization. Working in partnership with Mountain Bike Australia (MTBA), Joey made stops in Brisbane, Queensland; Tumbarumba, New South Wales; Canberra, ACT; Melbourne, Victoria; and Launceston and Hobart, Tasmania. The IMBA trip, funded by MTBA and supported by agencies in Queensland and Tasmania, was Joey's second to Australia in as many years. At each destination, Joey met with local mountain bikers, connected with land managers, lead discussions on trail access issues, presented slideshows displaying IMBA's work around the world, and shared advice on trailbuilding and maintenance techniques. Italy received a top grade in the 2003 IMBA Report Card, but northern Italian advocates are currently addressing their first potentially serious access dispute. A few trails in the popular Lake Garda area have been designated off limits to bicycle use. Discussions with local managers continue.
IMBA Italy Rep Mauro Bertolotto helped produce an exceptional mountain biking DVD that highlights the 24 Hours of Finale race held in the northern province of Liguria. This DVD includes coverage of an international IMBA Trailbuilding School, presented by longtime IMBA supporter and Jefferson County, Colorado, land manger Kim Frederick. Copies of the DVD are available by emailing .
