Extreme fire danger and limited financial resources prompted U.S. Forest Service officials to close three of the four southern California forests this fall. The San Bernadino, Angeles and Cleveland National Forest are closed to all recreation until winter rains reduce the fire danger. IMBA affiliated clubs are supporting the Forest Service's actions and are encouraging riders to respect the closures.
Mountain bikers in central Washington are fighting to save the Rat Pack trail in Cle Elum. The trail is located on old timber land that is now being subdivided and developed. Local advocates are working with landowners to secure a permanent public access easement. IMBA is supporting the effort by contributing to the drafting of the easement document and attending strategy meetings. For more info email eastern Washington IMBA rep Mike Brixey at .
Winter cold and snow doesn't necessarily mean the end of the riding season. With the right clothes and bike set-up, riding on a smooth carpet of velvety white can be the highlight of the year. For the scoop on snow riding visit www.allweather.com. The more hearty should go to www.susitna100.com for a full-on Jack London-style Alaska adventure.
