Early Summer 2002
After decades of ambiguous public use policy, Galbraith Mountain near Bellingham, Washington, officially opened to public non-motorized recreation. The Whatcom Independent Mountain Pedalers (WHIMPs) entered a formal stewardship agreement with Trillium Corporation to maintain and upgrade the trail network and conduct regular mountain bike patrols.
In Oregon, the Columbia Area Mountain Bike Advocates have entered into a stewardship arrangement with the Forest Service to help maintain the "Syncline" area in the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. They recently held a joint clean-up effort with Friends of the Gorge and Americorps.
In Northern California, The Responsible Organized Mountain Pedalers (ROMP) partnered with the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District to patrol trails and staff information tables at El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve. ROMP members are helping address environmental concerns stemming from heavy use of this popular south San Francisco Bay area park.

Several Orange County, California mountain bike groups, including SHARE, The Warrior's Society, the Nature Conservancy Mountain Bike Docents, Shimano, Trails4All, Billy Goat Racing and the Trail Angels are meeting with Orange County Parks to address management concerns and improve recreational opportunities in Orange County parks.
