Early Summer 2002
The Hoosier Mountain Bike Association (HMBA) in Indiana reports that phase one trail development has started at Westwood Park, a promising riding resource near Indianapolis. Westwood Park is a 630-acre park that surrounds a 180-acre lake near New Castle. To quote Dale Brier of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, "It's as if someone dropped 630 acres of the Hoosier National Forest 40 miles east of Castleton Square Mall!" One small, very important, note: THIS 10-12 MILE LOOP IS NOT TO BE RIDDEN UNTIL PHASE 1 WORK IS COMPLETE. HMBA, along with the park manager Jan Crider, are leading the trailwork efforts. Check the HMBA website at www.hmba.org for updates and trailwork dates.
Not too far away, Illinois is shaping up to be a racing hotspot this year, with the Peoria Area Mountain Bike Association (PAMBA) announcing the start of its 2002 Homegrown Race Series. Check www.pambamtb.org for complete details of the four-race series.
Lastly, who says racers never volunteer...or Texas racers never work? There is good Pay Dirt program news from Bicycle Sport Shop in Austin, Texas. Final numbers aren't in but so far 358 racers volunteered 4,785 hours in the 2002 Subaru Texas Mountain Bike Championship Series. Keep checking www.bicyclesportshop.com for updates on trailwork and Pay Dirt opportunities for 2003.
And while we all know Texas isn't REALLY in the Midwest, we welcome any and all access news for ITN. Email it to and the world will know.
