Spring 2002
Now that the strangely addictive late-night NBC TV monologues of Bob Costas have come to close, we can again focus on important matters - like choosing a destination for spring mountain biking adventures. Speaking of which, the folks down in St. George, Utah, are giving Moab and Fruita a serious run for their money. Local trailbuilders and the BLM just completed the Gem Trail, a seven-mile desert singletrack that hooks into the existing Hurricane Rim Trail. The BLM is not stopping there. By the end of April they will complete the seven-mile Broken Mesa Trail, a point-to-point route with about 1,000 feet of elevation loss. In addition, the BLM anticipates expanding the Gem Trail/Hurricane Rim Trail system to more than 28 miles by the beginning of 2004. For more info call 435-688-3200.
Big news on the National Park front: the Arizona Trail Association recently completed work on a section of the Arizona Trail from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to the Kaibab National Forest boundary line. This section, which lies within the boundaries of Grand Canyon National Park, is approximately 11 miles long and is open to mountain bikers. More Arizona Trail info: www.aztrail.org.
Both Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crews and program coordinator Jody Flemming recently attended the Western Trailbuilders Conference in Reno, Nevada. The conference was a gathering of some of the premier trailbuilders in the world. The IMBA team inspired and entertained the audience with its exceptionally informative presentation.
