South Carolina mountain bikers are excited by possible new trails near Gafney and Florence. The trail located near Gafney is a National Historic Trail while the Florence path is in Lynches River County Park. Trail construction continues in Hickory Knob State Park near McCormick, SC. A grand opening was recently held for the Lake Loop in Hickory and the mayor of McCormick and SC State Parks attended. On June 16, the Central Virginia Mountain Bike Association, Bikes Unlimited, IMBA and the National Wild Turkey Federation were hosts for the 2nd Annual Women in Outdoors event. More than 65 women participated in classes in nature photography, wilderness survival, archery, shooting skills and mountain biking. On June 2, the Twin Lakes Bicycle Club and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Arkansas celebrated the designation of Pigeon Creek National Recreational Trail near Mountain Home. Alfia River State Park, outside Tampa, Florida, will open to the general public in November. The local IMBA club, SWAMP, is hosting a Fat Tire Festival Nov 3-4 so that everyone can ride these new trails and enjoy the camping there. All indications are that this new trail system, built partially on an abandoned phosphate strip mine, will be one of the best in the state. SORBA recently opened a trail in Gainesville, Georgia, at the Gainesville Agricultural Center that is designed primarily for racing. The trail features a number of built-in obstacles that are sure to challenge all riders. SORBA member Andrew Wall and Mike Riter (Georgia Trails Education Specialist and former IMBA Trail Care Crew leader) designed the course.
