Volume 14, Number 2
Early Summer 2001

Last summer Los Alamos, New Mexico, was ravaged by forest fires. Not only were Federal weapons laboratories threatened, mountain biking trails were decimated. Fortunately, the Tuff Riders Mountain Bike Club stepped up, performing countless hours of work to repair the heavily eroded trails. The Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew visited Los Alamos in early April and had one of their most successful events ever-more than 70 people attended. Info: tuffriders.losalamos.com.

Speed good, bozo bad. This scenario played itself out recently in mountain biking hamlet of Missoula, Montana. A 29-year-old woman walking on a local trail was hospitalized after being hit from behind by cyclist traveling more than 30 miles an hour. The cyclist then jumped up, got back on his bike and continued on. The woman was released from the hospital in good condition, but the cyclist is still at-large. If caught, this person could be charged with reckless endangerment, similar to a motorist involved in a hit-and-run. We can only hope.

Fortunately, the Low Impact Mountain Bicyclists of Missoula (LIMB) continue to coordinate a variety of positive activitie. In addition to regular trailbuilding events, LIMB will host the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew in August. Info: www.limb.org.

Attention mountain bikers in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Break out the work gloves and attend one of the following Diamond Peak Mountain Bike Club trail work events: June 9, Horsetooth Mtn. Park; Aug. 4, Hewlett Gulch, September, Lory State Park. Info: www.diamondpeakspatrol.com.
