Spring 2001
Boulder's popular Walker Ranch reopened this winter after a September fire damaged 1,200 acres. The Boulder Offroad Alliance (www.boa-mtb.org) plans to be out there this spring to help rehabilitate the trails.
On Colorado's western slope, the Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association (www.copmoba.com) and the Grand Valley Bike Patrol (www.gvmbp.org) are working with the BLM to develop a 3-mile beginners' trail, dubbed Rustler's Loop, on the Kokopelli's Trail system. Kiosks will be installed along the trail to promote responsible trail use.
The Pima Trails Association (www.pimatrails.org) has awarded IMBA President Steve Anderson with a Lifetime Membership for his dedication and contributions to the Arizona trails community. Steve serves as the trails coordinator for Pima County. The Pima Trails Association is the founding member of the Urban Trails Coalition, a recently formed alliance of Tucson organizations whose mission is to develop, enhance and protect special outdoor spaces close to home.
Moab's BLM field office announced some interim travel restrictions in January. OHVs and mountain bikes must stay on existing trails and roads in some regions until a new area-wide Resource Management Plan is completed. In many areas, cross-country (off-trail) travel is banned in order to protect desert soils and vegetation. Some singletracks, including the Portal Trail, have been closed to motorized vehicles.
A new Montana wetlands and recreation brochure gives equal credence to mountain bikers, hikers and OHVers alike. The brochure requests that all users respect these important wetland resources and minimize our impact upon them.
