The Mountain Bike Association of Arizona (www.mbaa.org) organized volunteers for a clean-up project at Brown's Ranch, located in the Pima/Dynamite area that is very popular with local mountain bikers. The area was temporarily closed while the Arizona National Guard flew out unidentified "heavy objects" as part of a major clean-up of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Check out the next X-Files episode for more details.
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has designated all of Tucson Mountain Park as a proposed Critical Habitat Area for the pygmy owl. Local mountain bikers care much for their feathered friend, but question the CHA boundary decision-making process. Contact the SDMB for more info (www.sdmb.org).
An assessment of the popular Walker Ranch area in Boulder, CO., reports that close to 1,050 acres burned last summer, 400 severely. The Boulder Offroad Alliance (www.boa-mtb.org) has expressed interest in taking part in the rehabilitation process, but that process is being postponed due to unsafe conditions.
The Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association (www.copmoba.com) has been building bridges over troubled waters near Grand Junction. The Tabeguache Trail can now be ridden over Dry Creek when the creek is not so dry. The project was supported by the BLM and funded by the Colorado State Parks Off-Highway (OHV) Fund through a local Motorcycle Trail Riders Association grant application. Ironically, there are reports of trail damage in nearby Fruita stemming from a recent motorcycle event.
